Billboard Design Best Practices

The rules that separate a billboard people read in three seconds from one they drive past. Plus how AI billboard generators automate them.

1. Six words or fewer

Drivers see a billboard for about five seconds. The industry rule of thumb is six words or fewer for the primary message. If your headline needs a comma, cut it.

2. One idea, one focal point

A billboard is not a landing page. Pick the single most important thing and make everything else support it: one benefit, one product, one call to action.

3. Contrast beats color

High contrast between text and background is what makes copy legible from 100 metres away. Dark text on a light panel, or the reverse — never mid-tone on mid-tone.

4. Big, bold typography

Use display weights. Thin fonts vanish at distance. Rule of thumb: 1 inch of letter height per 10 feet of viewing distance.

5. Show the product, or the benefit

The image should either be the product itself or the outcome of using it. Abstract lifestyle shots without context waste the space.

6. Brand mark, not brand essay

Logo goes bottom-right or bottom-left, sized so it registers without competing with the headline. Skip the tagline unless it's the headline itself.

How AI billboard generators apply these rules

A good AI billboard tool bakes these constraints in: it picks a short headline, enforces contrast between text and background, sizes typography for legibility, and places the product front-and-centre. That's what CheckOutMyBillboard does — you paste a product URL and it returns a billboard designed against these principles.
